Pierce
Schmidt DVM
I
have been involved with veterinary medicine for most of my life.
I started as a kennel worker at a practice in Middletown, CT while a
teenager. I received a Bachelor of
Arts degree in Biology from Hobart College in Geneva, NY. I then moved to Fort Collins, Colorado where I attended
Colorado State University. There I
earned a Master of Science degree from the Department of Animal Science and my
D.V.M. degree from the College of Veterinary Medicine.
I have been
working at Bristol Veterinary Associates since 1983 and
have
been a partner since 1990.
I
enjoy the variety of
clinical cases that being a general practitioner presents and I like the challenge of every day practice and the continuing
learning process that veterinary medicine offers. New developments are always on the horizon.
My
interests outside of work include working with young people in the Boy Scout
program, camping, fishing, hiking, gardening, bird watching and model shipbuilding. My wife and I have two
sons, one a sophomore at the University of Connecticut, and the other a junior
in high school. And of course we
have pets - three cats and a dog so far.

In 1976 I graduated
from Clark University in Worcester, MA and after applying to dental schools,
decided to follow my heart which led me to cleaning cages for my local
veterinarian instead. Five years later, I graduated from the University of
Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine.
After practicing at a small animal clinic in Newton, MA for seven years,
I moved to Connecticut and joined the staff at Bristol Veterinary Associates.
My greatest interests
are internal medicine and endocrinology but I also enjoy soft tissue
surgery. I try to emphasize communication with clients, as I feel it is
important for the owner to be involved in the process of caring for their pet.
My spare time is
largely devoted to my family (my wife, two daughters, two cats and a dog) and my
house. I also enjoy reading, listening to music, and playing ping pong and
tennis.
